Procedure
• Generally an outpatient procedure performed using general
or local anesthesia, depending largely upon the age of the patient.
• Typically, an incision is made in the back of the ear allowing
Dr. Moore to bend the cartilage back toward the head; non-removable
stitches are used to help maintain the new shape but are well hidden.
• A scar remains behind the ear that fades over time.
Who Is A Candidate?
• Individuals with protruding ears, or other ear problems
that can be helped with surgery such as "lop ear," "cupped
ear," "shell ear," as well as additional problems.
• Most patients are between the ages of 4 and 14; by age four
the ear has grown to 2/3 of its adult size; many adults have the
cosmetic ear procedures as well.
Intended Results
• Less protruding ears
• Improved self esteem
Recuperation
• Patients return home in a head bandage to aid in healing
and maintaining the new shape of the ear.
• Most patients experience throbbing or aching in the ears
for a few days.
• Generally, patients wear a headband after the surgical bandages
are removed.
• Normal activities that do not involve bending the ear can
be resumed in 5 – 7 days.
